Antique 19th-century bronze Miraculous Medal / Virgin Mary Catholic devotional pendant. This is an especially interesting early English-language variety of the Miraculous Medal. The obverse depicts the Virgin Mary surrounded by the inscription:“O HOLY MARY EVER VIRGIN AND CONCEIVED WITHOUT SIN
PRAY FOR US WHO IMPLORE THY AID”with the date 1830 below. The reverse displays the traditional Miraculous Medal symbols: the cross above the letter M, the Sacred Heart of Jesus with crown of thorns, the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced by a sword, and twelve surrounding stars. This exact English inscription is documented in numismatic literature as a bronze Miraculous Medal variety of 19th-century date. Please note that the 1830 date commemorates the apparition of the Virgin Mary to St. Catherine Labouré in Paris; it is part of the medal design and should not be interpreted as the medal's exact manufacture date. The first Miraculous Medals were produced in 1832.Appears to be bronze or a similar copper alloy. Original integral suspension loop remains intact.Very appealing antique condition with age-appropriate wear, surface marks and natural dark brown/golden patina. Lettering, Mary figure, stars, cross, M and both hearts remain well defined. Please examine all photographs for exact condition.A very nice genuine antique Catholic devotional medal and a less commonly encountered English-language Miraculous Medal variety.Medal only; no necklace or chain included.
