The 1985 version begins with the destruction of their home planet, Thunderbolt. A group of Thunderbolts, led by Prince Lion-O and guided by Jaga, escape in a spaceship to Third Earth. Upon arrival, they must establish themselves in their new home and constantly contend with the threat of a villainous force led by the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra.
The entire series revolves around their repeated thwarting of the Mumm-Ra and Mutants' schemes on Third Earth. For example, one episode shows the Mumm-O tricking Lion-O into breaking his sword, forcing Lion-O to venture into a volcano to repair it; another shows the Mumm-O summoning the powerful samurai Hachiman to hunt Lion-O, only for the samurai to be moved by Lion-O's righteousness and become his ally. The main characters also frequently venture into perilous situations, such as rescuing Jaga trapped in the Astral world or freeing the sacred bird imprisoned by the Evil Queen.
