1963 Official Austria Mint Silver Restrike 2 Ducats - NGC Proof 67! Superb Coin! Minted in Vienna by the Austrian Mint.
This is an official 1963 Austrian Mint silver restrike of a rare 1642 gold 2 ducats of Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Tyrol.The original 1642 piece was a gold trade/presentation coin from the Hall mint in Tyrol. The Austrian Mint has a long official restrike tradition (the 1915 ducats and Maria Theresa thalers are the most famous). In 1963 it produced official copies of several historic gold types, including this 1642 2 ducats, both in gold and in silver. These were not circulating coins; they were sold to collectors and as bullion/medallic pieces.

• Obverse: Armored Archduke Ferdinand Karl (also called Ferdinand Charles or Ferdinand Carol) rides right on a caparisoned horse, holding a marshal’s baton. A detailed city view (Innsbruck) appears in the background; the date 1642 sits below the horse.The original 1642 dies were engraved by Hans Amende (initials HA sometimes visible in the grass on originals). The restrike is a close but modern copy of that composition.

• Reverse: Saint Leopold III stands facing, in armor, holding a banner in one hand and a model of a church (Klosterneuburg Abbey) in the other. Fourteen coats of arms encircle him.Leopold III “the Good” or “the Pious” (c. 1073–1136) was a Babenberg margrave of Austria. He founded major monasteries (Klosterneuburg, Heiligenkreuz, others), promoted towns, and mediated in the Investiture Controversy. Canonized in 1485, he was declared patron saint of the Austrian lands in 1663 under Emperor Leopold I.

Historical Context of the Original 1642 Issue:The date sits in the final years of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648).1642 falls during the regency period. Ferdinand Karl was born 17 May 1628. His father, Archduke Leopold V, died in 1632 when the boy was four. His mother, Claudia de’ Medici, ruled as regent until he came of age in 1646. The coin therefore shows a teenage archduke (age 14) presented as a mounted military commander over his capital.Hall’s gold 2 ducats functioned both as high-value trade pieces and as political statements: the young ruler on horseback asserted continuity and martial authority; St. Leopold on the reverse tied the Tyrolean Habsburgs to Austria’s Babenberg founding saint and to the broader patrimonial lands.
Ferdinand Karl’s personal rule (1646–1662) was short and mixed. He was an absolutist who stopped calling diets after 1648, lived extravagantly, sold rights and territories (including wasting French compensation for the loss of Alsatian lands), and had his chancellor Wilhelm Biener executed after a secret trial in 1651. He was also a genuine patron of Italian opera at the Innsbruck court. He married his cousin Anna de’ Medici in 1646; they had a daughter, Claudia Felicitas, who later married Emperor Leopold I. Ferdinand Karl died of smallpox in 1662 at age 34. His brother Sigismund Francis succeeded him and died childless in 1665, ending the Tyrolean Habsburg male line; the lands reverted to the main imperial line.
