The green cloth hardcover is fine. The dust jacket is good, with several small tears at the head of the spine; elsewhere the DJ is very good and displays well.
Published for MoMA’s exhibition of Matisse’s late cut-paper work, the book contains 44 plates, including 13 in color. The color plates were printed in France by Mourlot Frères. Wheeler’s text accompanies reproductions of the large gouache cut-outs Matisse made in the final years of his life.
Matisse called this way of working “drawing with scissors.” The shapes are spare, but their scale and color give these late works remarkable energy. This 1961 publication preserves an early presentation of that final chapter, issued alongside an exhibition that later traveled to Chicago and San Francisco.
