Up for sale is this 1953Chant Funèbre Pour un Guerrier (“Funeral Song for a Warrior”) sheet music folio. The featured cover illustration is by the famed Master of Modernism, Henri Matisse. The lithograph is classic \"late Matisse\"—minimalist, elegant, and created with a single, continuous fluid line. His \"H. Matisse 51\" signature is in the plate, originally in his 1951 drawing of the mask-style face of the guerrier (or warrior) in repose or death.
The work consists of music composed by Hungarian-French composer Paul Arma (1905–1987) for voice and piano, based on a text by French writer Claude Aveline. This is the complete collectors edition of Song #1 (out of the set of 11) published by Heugel & Cie in Paris. Aside from the full musical score, the 2nd page contains the Justification de Tirage (or \"the statement of edition\"). It translates to: \"There have been printed from this work, besides the ordinary edition, twenty-six copies h.c. [hors commerce/not for sale] from A to Z, and fifty copies numbered from 1 to 50.\"

As a founding member of the Groupe du musée de l\'Homme, one of the first French Resistance networks. He worked as an \"underground\" writer, using his pen to combat Nazi ideology when physical weapons were scarce. Having survived the war while many of his colleagues in the Resistance were executed, Aveline spent the post-war years dedicated to \"The Duty of Memory.\" His lyrics for Song #1 were not just poetry; they were a testimony to the friends he had lost.
