1948 Franklin Liberty Bell Half Dollar No Mint Philly Initials JRS Circulated:
$34.95
1948 Franklin Liberty Bell Half Dollar minted in Philadelphia with the initials \"JRS\".
A 1948 Franklin half dollar with the \"JR\" initial actually features the designer\'s initials JRS (for John R. Sinnock). This is standard for every genuine Franklin half dollar and is not a rare error. The coin is 90% silver content. Sinnock was the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint who designed the obverse of the coin. Located at the truncation/cutoff of Benjamin Franklin’s shoulder, these initials caused a minor historical controversy when the coin was released in 1948, with some conspiracy theorists falsely claiming the \"JRS\" was a tribute to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. The Mint quickly clarified they were simply the artist\'s initials.
