Rand McNally & Company, Chicago, Illinois

Original 1947 postwar edition of John B. Sparks' remarkable large-format Histomap of Evolution.
This enormous color folding chart attempts to depict billions of years of the development of Earth, life and mankind on a single continuous visual timeline.
Colored streams and bands represent different forms of life, with their changing widths intended to illustrate their relative dominance over time. The sides contain geological, cultural and historical chronology, while a glossary appears along the bottom.
The 1947 edition updates the chart into the immediate post-WWII era, including World War II, establishment of the United Nations in 1945, the beginning of the “Atomic Age” and other contemporary events.
The chart measures approximately 57.5 × 21.5 inches when fully unfolded, consistent with documented examples of the 1947 edition.
Original outer sleeve is present and included.
The chart remains visually impressive with strong color. It shows expected age and wear concentrated along its numerous original folding lines. The outer sleeve has substantially heavier wear, including tears, losses, creasing, rubbing and discoloration.
The chart has been preserved folded along its original folds. No modern repairs or restoration have been performed.
Please examine all listing photographs carefully, particularly the fold lines, edges and outer sleeve, as the photographs form an important part of the condition description.
Sold exactly as pictured.
An unusual original piece with crossover interest for collectors of antique and vintage maps, scientific charts, natural history, evolution, information graphics, data visualization and graphic design.
Note: This chart reflects scientific and anthropological ideas and terminology from its period of publication. Some classifications and terminology shown are now obsolete or discredited.
