Estate fresh original 1945 Letter from Hollywood legend Joan Crawford to Juanita and Joe Walker regarding her role in MILDRED PIERCE
Estate fresh original typed letter from Hollywood icon Joan Crawford to cinematographer Joseph (Joe) Walker and his wife, dated January 12th, 1945.
In the letter Crawford writes: “How sweet of you to send me that lovely Christmas card. I’m so grateful to you for thinking of me.” She then apologizes for not being able to get Joe the cinematography job on Mildred Pierce because he was already committed to working with Rosalind Russell (presumably on She Wouldn't Say Yes) or Irene Dunne. She says “I would like you to know, Joe, that I tried desperately to get you for MILDRED PIERCE but you were about to start with Rosalind Russell or Irene Dunne or ten other people. At any rate I’m terribly sorry and I hope we can do another picture together some time.” Signed “Joan”.
About the Movie: Mildred Pierce (1945) is a classic film noir drama starring Joan Crawford in her Oscar-winning role. The film was a major critical and commercial success and is considered one of the greatest films of the Golden Age.
Provenance: I acquired this in the 1990s directly from Juanita Walker, wife of legendary Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Joseph (Joe) Walker. Juanita was an avid collector of Hollywood autographs even before marrying Joseph. Joe Walker was Frank Capra’s favorite cameraman and renowned for his ability to make Hollywood’s leading ladies look stunning on screen. Juanita co-authored the book The Light on Her Face about Joe’s illustrious career. This piece comes straight from the Walker family collection.
About Joan Crawford: Joan Crawford (1904–1977) was one of Hollywood’s most iconic and enduring stars. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Mildred Pierce (1945) and starred in dozens of classic films including Grand Hotel, The Women, and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
