Offered here is a 1938 first edition/first printing of John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, edited by Linnie Marsh Wolfe and published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, at The Riverside Press, Cambridge.
This illustrated volume collects material from the unpublished journals of legendary naturalist and conservationist John Muir, including his observations, travels, experiences in Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada, and writings about the natural world.
The book retains its original tan cloth hardcover with red lettering and horizontal line design. No dust jacket is present. The copyright page states Copyright 1938 by Wanda Muir Hanna, John Muir’s daughter, and the title page is dated 1938.
Condition: Vintage pre-owned condition with expected age-related wear. The cloth covers show discoloration, spotting and handling wear. Pages have age toning, particularly around the edges. There is some wear/separation at the interior binding/hinge as shown in the photographs. Several small handwritten numbers appear on the “By John Muir” page.
There is also a personal gift inscription on the front endpaper from the original owner’s father to his daughter. This is a family inscription and is not represented as John Muir’s signature or an author inscription.
