The two $2 notes are TRUE CONSECUTIVE / SEQUENTIAL SERIAL NUMBERS – 675 and 676 – and feature Thomas Jefferson on the face and John Trumbull’s famous Declaration of Independence scene on the reverse.
★ HISTORIC “IN GOD WE TRUST” TRANSITION ★
One particularly interesting feature of this group is the comparison between the 1935-G and 1957-A Silver Certificates.
The Series 1935-G note offered here is the recognized NO MOTTO variety and does NOT display “IN GOD WE TRUST” on its reverse.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1955 requiring the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” to appear on United States currency. During the years that followed, the motto began appearing on American paper money.
This creates a fascinating side-by-side historical comparison:
1935-G SILVER CERTIFICATE – NO MOTTO
1957-A SILVER CERTIFICATE – WITH “IN GOD WE TRUST”
The Series 1935-G is especially interesting to collectors because both No-Motto and later With-Motto examples exist, making the issue an important transitional chapter in the history of U.S. paper currency.
The 1935-G No Motto example is cataloged by collectors as the Fr. 1616 variety.
★ CLASSIC BLUE-SEAL SILVER CERTIFICATES ★
Unlike today’s Federal Reserve Notes, these older notes were issued as SILVER CERTIFICATES. The face states that silver was held on deposit in the Treasury and was payable to the bearer on demand.
Silver Certificates are no longer redeemable for silver bullion, making surviving examples tangible reminders of an entirely different era of American money.
The 1935-G and 1957-A notes show substantial honest circulation, folds, wear and age consistent with notes that actually circulated in commerce. Please inspect all photographs carefully for exact condition.
The two 2017-A $2 notes are substantially cleaner and appear crisp, but no numerical currency grade is being represented or guaranteed.
