A popular early Washington Quarter issue in pleasing Choice Mint State, the 1934-D combines strong collector demand with the historic appeal of the second regular-year Denver emission in this long-collected series.

The obverse features John Flanagan’s stately left-facing portrait of George Washington, with LIBERTY above, the date 1934 below, and IN GOD WE TRUST positioned at the lower left. On the reverse, a perched eagle stands proudly on a bundle of arrows framed by olive branches, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM above and QUARTER DOLLAR below. Struck at the Denver Mint, this issue was produced after the brief interruption in quarter coinage that followed the Washington design’s 1932 debut during the depths of the Great Depression.

Certified PCGS MS64, this example resides at the threshold of Gem quality and offers the kind of eye appeal sought by collectors building high-end early date sets. The surfaces are well-preserved for the grade, with attractive mint frost and generally sharp definition throughout much of the design. Luster remains vibrant, complementing the issue’s silver brilliance and any subtle toning that may be present at the margins. Overall presentation is handsome and entirely consistent with a premium Choice Uncirculated representative.

The 1934-D is an important issue within the early Washington Quarter series. After no quarters were struck in 1933, production resumed in 1934 with modifications to the hubs, most notably to strengthen the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. For Philadelphia, collectors recognize Light Motto, Medium Motto, and Heavy Motto varieties. Denver, however, used only the Medium and Heavy Motto hubs, with no Light Motto pieces known from this mint. That nuance gives the 1934-D additional interest for specialists, while the issue as a whole remains a staple of better early-date Washington Quarter collections. Denver’s mintage of 3,527,200 pieces was its highest quarter production since the 1920-D Standing Liberty Quarter, yet it remains a distinctly collectible early issue from a formative period in the series.

With a PCGS population of 595 in MS64 and 478 finer, the coin is available enough to be collectible yet sufficiently limited in this grade to maintain strong market interest. Demand for original, problem-free early Washington Quarters remains consistently healthy, particularly for Denver issues from the 1930s that bridge the gap between the famous 1932 keys and the broader later Mint State set. This is not a rare coin in an absolute sense, but it is a desirable and condition-sensitive early silver quarter that enjoys enduring popularity with both type buyers and series specialists.

An appealing Choice Mint State 1934-D Washington Quarter, offering solid technical quality, historic early-series importance, and lasting collector demand.
