On W. C. Fields
Born William Claude Dukenfield in 1880, W. C. Fields began his career as a skilled vaudeville juggler and became an internationally known stage performer. He later incorporated comedy into his act and appeared for several years in the Ziegfeld Follies, where he developed many of the routines and character traits that eventually became familiar to film audiences.
By the time this card was issued in 1929, Fields had become an established Paramount Pictures performer. The card’s reverse mentions several of his early silent films, including That Royle Girl, The Old Army Game, So’s Your Old Man, The Potters, and Tillie’s Punctured Romance.
The card appeared at an important point in Fields’s career and in motion-picture history, as Hollywood was making the transition from silent films to sound. Fields subsequently became one of the most distinctive screen comedians of the sound era, starring in such classics as It’s a Gift, The Man on the Flying Trapeze, My Little Chickadee, The Bank Dick, and Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.
