Due to the extreme disruptions of the First World War, the Melbourne Mint could not keep up with demand. Australia outsourced production to the famous Ralph Heaton & Sons Mint in Birmingham, England. This coin proudly displays the scarce \"H\" mint mark on the reverse side. Early Australian pennies with the Heaton Mint mark are highly prized by collectors for their historical backstory and low survival rates in higher grades.
