The Design
The obverse carries a right-facing laureate portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ruled Austria-Hungary for 68 years — one of the longest reigns in European history. The wreath and the sharp relief of the engraving are what draw most collectors to this issue.
Turn it over and you get the crowned double-headed eagle: the arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, wings spread, shields of the constituent kingdoms across its breast. It\'s one of the most detailed reverse designs of any small-format European gold coin.
