1905 Kipling The Jungle Book Custom Morocco Kaa Snake Binding

Rudyard Kipling. The Jungle Book. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1905.

Early Macmillan edition, illustrated throughout in black and white by John Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Drake, and P. Frenzeny.

The book is distinguished by an imaginative modern custom binding designed around Kipling’s jungle setting. The turquoise-green morocco spine features a gilt pointillé serpent winding vertically upward, strongly evoking Kaa, the great python of the Mowgli stories. The spine is paired with moss- and jungle-toned patterned boards.

First published in book form in 1894, The Jungle Book became one of the defining classics of English children’s literature. The collection includes the stories of Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, Shere Khan, and Kaa, together with “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” “The White Seal,” “Toomai of the Elephants,” and “Her Majesty’s Servants.”

This is an early 1905 reprint rather than the 1894 first edition. Its principal collectible feature is the later custom custom binding

  • Turquoise-green morocco leather spine

  • Gilt pointillé snake design

  • Moss- and jungle-toned patterned paper boards

  • Coordinating green endpapers

  • Decorative headbands

  • Gilt top edge

  • The serpent is formed from numerous individual gilt dots, creating a shimmering, scaled effect. The design suggests Kaa without using a literal pictorial illustration.

No binder’s signature, ticket, or identifying mark has been located. The binding is therefore described as an anonymous modern custom binding.
