Offered here is a scarce first-year 1903 U.S.-Philippines Five Centavos Proof, certified PF 64 by NGC. Only 2,558 proofs were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, giving this attractive Premium Choice Proof immediate appeal for collectors of U.S. territorial coinage, Philippine issues, and low-mintage proofs.
The classic design pairs Melecio Figueroa's seated figure beside an anvil and smoking volcano with the United States eagle-and-shield reverse adapted by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. Its legends capture the coin's distinctive place in the American administration of the Philippines at the opening of the twentieth century.
This example has strong detail and reflective proof character beneath deep, original-looking charcoal-gray patina. Steel-blue, muted russet, and golden accents enliven both sides, while the pale devices contrast handsomely against the darker fields. The coin presents with excellent historic character in an earlier NGC brown-label holder.
