Offered here is a historic 1903-B British Trade Dollar featuring extensive Chinese merchant chop marks on both sides.
These large silver trade coins circulated throughout East Asia, where merchants and money changers frequently punched them with identifying marks after testing and accepting their silver content. This example displays an especially interesting collection of overlapping chops, giving it considerable character and direct evidence of its commercial history.
The obverse features Britannia standing with her trident and shield, a merchant ship in the background, and the clearly visible 1903 date. The reverse displays the ornate British Trade Dollar design with the denomination in Chinese and Jawi Malay, although portions of the design are obscured by the numerous historic chop marks.
