The letter opens with the standard honorific salutation to a superior official and goes on, in the petitioner\'s own formulaic bureaucratic language, to request admission/processing of enrollment paperwork on behalf of the writer. The reverse is blank apart from a brief period annotation and a later archivist\'s pencil note identifying the document: \"Darülfünun-u Şahane Müdüriyeti kalemine yazılan dilekçe, Ahmet Vahid Efendi, H.1319\" (\"Petition written to the Secretariat of the Directorate of the Imperial Darülfünun, [by] Ahmed Vahid Efendi, AH 1319\"). This is the cover petition that opens Ahmed Vahid Efendi\'s university application file.
Salutation: \"My gracious Efendi Hazretleri\" [standard respectful opening to a superior]. Body: your humble servant [describes prior education / examination status], respectfully requests that the necessary papers be completed so that [he] may be admitted to enroll at the Imperial Darülfünun. The Hejaz or Hijaz is a historical region of the Arabian Peninsula that includes the majority of the western region of Saudi Arabia, covering the cities of Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, Tabuk, Yanbu, Taif and Al-Bahah. It is thus known as the \"Western Province\", and it is bordered in the west by the Red Sea, in the north by Jordan and the Gulf of Aqaba, in the east by the Najd, and in the south by South Arabia.
The Hejaz railway (also spelled Hedjaz or Hijaz; Arabic: سِكَّة حَدِيد الحِجَاز sikkat ḥadīd al-ḥijāz or Arabic: الخَط الحَدِيدِي الحِجَازِي, Ottoman Turkish: حجاز دمیریولی, Turkish: Hicaz Demiryolu) was a narrow-gauge railway that ran from Damascus to Medina, through the Hejaz region of modern-day Saudi Arabia, with a branch line to Haifa on the Mediterranean Sea. The project was ordered by Sultan Abdul Hamid II in March 1900. It was a part of the Ottoman railway network and the original goal was to extend the line from the Haydarpaşa Terminal in Kadıköy, Istanbul beyond Damascus to the Islamic holy city of Mecca. However, construction was interrupted due to the outbreak of World War I, and it reached only to Medina, 400 kilometres (250 mi) short of Mecca. The completed Damascus to Medina section was 1,300 kilometres (810 mi). It was the only railway completely built and operated by the Ottoman Empire.
