Original 1901 third edition of M. F. Patterson’s Illustrated Catalogue of Dental Furniture, Instruments and Materials. The title page identifies this as the revised and enlarged third edition issued by M. F. Patterson’s dental depots in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Des Moines.
This substantial turn-of-the-century trade catalogue is filled with detailed black-and-white illustrations of dental chairs, cabinets, engines, hand instruments, crowns, bridgework supplies, gas-generating equipment, laboratory tools, materials, and other equipment used by dentists of the period.
The catalogue contains 666 numbered pages through the final index and retains an original “New Discount Sheet” dated July 16, 1900, inside the front cover. A publisher’s notice explains that the catalogue was originally supplied one copy per customer and that duplicate copies cost $3 at the time.
The decorative pictorial cloth cover depicts a hand holding dental instruments and is especially striking. The book offers an extensive visual record of early dental technology and would make an excellent reference or display piece for a collector of antique dentistry, medical history, scientific instruments, or illustrated trade catalogues.
The book is in fair antique condition and should be handled carefully. The pictorial cloth binding has substantial edge and corner wear, fraying, rubbing, staining, and general soiling. The spine ends are worn. Both the front and rear hinges are heavily cracked and open, with binding material and sewing exposed, and the text block is loose from the case at the hinges.
The endpapers show wear, discoloration, writing, and areas of paper or label residue. Interior pages have expected age toning, foxing, staining, scattered edge wear, pencil writing, numbers, and occasional marks or doodles. Despite these issues, the printed content remains readable and many of the detailed catalogue illustrations remain remarkably clear.
The book is complete through page 666 and the final index, but it has not been individually collated page by page. It is therefore offered as photographed. Please review all photographs closely for the binding damage, inscriptions, page condition, original discount sheet, illustrated contents, and overall antique condition.
