A rare Japanese wood netsuke of a seated Rakan (Arhat), Edo period, attributed to the 18th century.
Expressively carved as an emaciated Buddhist holy man with prominently defined ribs, seated in voluminous robes. The surface is finished in red and black Negoro-style lacquer, displaying extensive natural rubbing and wear that reveals the contrasting darker lacquer beneath and gives the piece a particularly attractive aged patina.
The reverse is deeply carved with flowing folds of the robe and incorporates the himotoshi.
