Item up for sale is an amazing and rare 1st edition hardback book published in 1896 titled " 1896: The Great Campaign or Political Struggles of Parties, Leaders and Issues". This book was authored by Lawrence F. Prescott and published by The Matthews - Northrup Co. of Buffalo, New York. Book was designed as a non partisan voter guide covering the candidates and political notable of that election cycle including William McKinley, Garret Hobart, William Jennings Bryan, Arthur Sewell, Joshua Levering, Hale Johnson, Charles Bentley and James Southgate with coverage of the political conventions of the Republican, Democrat and Prohibition Parties. Book covers the history of American political parties and gives an overview of where candidates stood on burning issues of the day such as protectionism, the gold standard, free silver coinage, bond issues and much more.Book features numerous black and white photographs spread throughout the592 numbered pages of the book. All pages exhibit yellowing and patina consistent with age with pages exhibiting foxing (brown spotting ) throughout all consistent with age. Binding shows some looseness with some cracking along the hinge paper consistent with age and heavy use. Spine shows some surface wear and color fade to lettering making the spine wording faint along the top portion.
Cover has pastedowns on the front and back showing portraits of various political leaders of the day with graphics showing soiling, patina and surface wear. Book cover boards and spine show wear, tear and loss around all edges and corners throughout with the upper right corner of the front cover board showing the most notable example of heavy wear as you can see in photos. Book throughout exhibits soiling and patina consistent with age and use.
Book measures ( when closed ) 7-7/8" top to bottom by 5-5/8" wide by 1-1/2" thick. Incredible and incredibly rare relic that comes fresh to the market from a recent estate buyout where it sat stored away for generations before only now seeing the light of day once again.
