I’m offering an early 1895 copy of The Baptism with the Holy Spirit by R. A. Torrey, one of the important evangelical writers and Bible teachers associated with the late nineteenth-century revival movement.
The title page carries the Chicago Bible Institute Colportage Association imprint at 250 La Salle Avenue, with the Eastern Depot at East Northfield, Massachusetts. The copyright page states 1895 by Fleming H. Revell Company. This is the original 1895-era publication, not one of the numerous modern reprints of Torrey’s text.
This small cloth hardcover is a particularly interesting piece of early evangelical literature dealing directly with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, spiritual power, Christian service, the gifts of the Spirit and Torrey’s interpretation of the relevant biblical passages.
Condition is clearly used and aged. The original cloth binding has overall discoloration, spotting, rubbing and edge/corner wear. Pages have age toning and scattered staining. There are several old pencil marginal notes visible in the text, and one photographed page has a long diagonal crease/tear running from the upper edge. The binding remains together and the text is readable. I’ve photographed these condition issues rather than trying to make an antique working copy sound pristine.
A scarce early Torrey book with strong connections to the Bible Institute Colportage Association and the evangelical movement surrounding the Chicago Bible Institute and D. L. Moody era.
