1894 Hodge Fence Co. Lake Charles Louisiana Cattle Illustrated Billhead Texas For Sale

Original illustrated billhead from The Hodge Fence Company, Limited, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, dated March 28, 1894.

Features a detailed illustration of cattle enclosed by fencing, ornate company lettering, and red and blue accounting rules. The heading advertises “Steam Fence Works” and identifies the company as a manufacturer of wired picket fence and gates, with the statement “We Sell to Dealers Only.”

The printed heading also lists company officers. An earlier officer listing at the upper left has been crossed out, with a revised printed list beside it.

Based on our reading of the handwriting, the bill was issued to M. T. Jones Lumber Co. in Houston, Texas, for rolls of fencing. Entries include quantities, prices, discounts, freight calculations and a railroad car reference. A shipping notation appears to read “Shipped to Coleman, Texas.”

These handwritten details represent our best interpretation and may be read differently. Please review the photographs for the original wording, date and figures.

Condition: Age toning, horizontal and vertical folds, creasing, scattered spots, minor edge and corner wear, and small punctures. The upper-right corner is folded. Handwritten ink and pencil accounting marks are present, with some show-through visible on the reverse. The illustrated heading remains clear and detailed.

An attractive piece of nineteenth-century agricultural and industrial advertising, with interest for collectors of Louisiana history, Texas commerce, cattle imagery, fencing and illustrated billheads.
