Background:The series was issued in advance of Chicago’s 1893 World Columbian Exposition, an international fair celebrating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ 1492 arrival in the New World.The series was used to advertise the event – the first time postage stamps were used to promote a commercial event.
The Famous \"Broken Hat Variety\":This stamp shows Columbus coming ashore at Guanahani (San Salvador) in the West Indies.He claimed the land in the name of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain.And so certain was Columbus that he was in India, he called the natives “Indians.”The “Broken Hat” variety occurred during the printing of this stamp – when a break developed in the printing press’s transfer roll.The flaw caused a piece to be missing from the hat of the foreground figure to the left of Columbus.
