The title page advertises the volume as being “Embellished with more than Three Hundred Superb Engravings.”
The book covers an enormous range of late-19th-century subjects involving world travel, geography, peoples, wildlife and exploration. The illustrations include animals and tropical wildlife, prominent historical figures, landscapes, peoples and scenes from Asia, Africa and other parts of the world.
Original blue cloth binding features a highly decorative multicolor pictorial front cover depicting pyramids, camels, tropical foliage, an elephant, pagoda and gilt globe. Front decoration remains quite attractive considering the book’s age.
Binding has substantial damage. Spine cloth is heavily worn, frayed and torn with losses at the top and edges. Front and rear hinges are significantly weakened/split, with separation between the covers and text block visible in the photographs. Boards have edge/corner wear, rubbing, staining and discoloration.
Page edges are heavily age-toned/browned with spotting. Interior pages show age toning, foxing/spotting, occasional stains, small tears and other age/use wear.
There is an elaborate vintage “Presented To / By” presentation bookplate inside with handwritten notation and date. Please see photos.
Book contains numerous period engravings and illustrations. It has not been inspected page-by-page, so additional flaws and/or missing pages or illustrations may be present.
Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition. Photos are considered part of the description.
