1887 Northern Pacific Railroad Letter Dakota Territory Livestock Emigrant Freigh: $68.95
The letter concerns shipping livestock, household goods and "emigrant movables" into Dakota Territory. It discusses special emigrant shipping privileges, the number of livestock that could be loaded in a railroad car, and the regular cattle freight rate per car from St. Paul to Minnewaukan. Of particular historical interest is the statement that it was the railroad's desire to put the recipient "and the farmers in your district, on good sound farming basis. " The correspondence provides an unusually direct glimpse into the Northern Pacific Railroad's role in agricultural settlement and transportation in Dakota Territory. The letterhead lists J. M. Hannaford as Traffic Manager and S. L. Moore as Assistant General Freight Agent. The letter bears S. L. Moore's original signature.
