Fascinating original 1886 Victorian-era issue of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, published by Harper & Brothers, New York.
This September 1886 issue retains its attractive original illustrated cover and contains numerous period articles, engravings and advertisements.
One of the most fascinating features is an original full-page 1886 advertisement for Joseph Burnett & Co.’s “The Best Hair Dressing — COCAINE,” advertised as a treatment for dandruff, hair growth and scalp irritation.
The advertising section also includes wonderful period ads for Durkee’s Salad Dressing and Cold Meat Sauce, Durkee’s spices and mustard, Raven Gloss Shoe Dressing, Webster’s Dictionary and other Victorian products.
Interior illustrated material includes the wonderful period engraving “Skating in Summer, Ocean Grove.”
A particularly interesting survivor for collectors of Victorian advertising, antique magazines, medical/pharmaceutical history, 19th-century ephemera and American history.
Condition: Very good overall for its approximately 140-year age, with age toning, spotting, cover/edge wear, creasing and other expected signs of age. Interior pages and advertisements present nicely. There is some period handwriting/notation visible on the advertising pages. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition and completeness.
