In 1884 the Sanborn Map & Publishing Co. of New York surveyed Detroit for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch across large double-page sheets. Every building is shown to scale and colour-coded for construction, with its height, use, street number and hazards noted, together with the hydrants, water mains, steam boilers and fire walls that the underwriters needed to know.
Volume One opens on a key map of the whole city, then works block by block through the downtown along Woodward, Jefferson, Griswold and Shelby, the warehouses, docks and shipyards of the Detroit River front, the Campus Martius and the City Hall, the churches and public buildings, and the car works, foundries, lumber yards and railroad grounds beyond. Thirty-seven numbered sheets, each a two-page spread in this edition, record the city as it stood in the year Detroit was becoming the industrial capital of the Great Lakes.
