Original British Egypt Medal 1882–1889 with “THE NILE 1884-85” clasp, officially named to Canadian Voyageur No. 235, Boatman J. Larogue of the Ottawa Contingent.
Exceptionally scarce Canadian Nile Expedition medal from the 1884–85 Gordon Relief Expedition.
The Canadian Voyageurs were specially recruited experienced boatmen sent to Egypt to assist Lord Wolseley's expedition up the Nile toward Khartoum. Their river-handling expertise was essential in navigating the difficult Nile cataracts.
Medal is officially impressed on the edge:
235. BOATN. J. LAROGUE. OTTAWA CONTGT.
Includes the THE NILE 1884-85 clasp and blue/white striped ribbon.
This exact medal is documented as Lot 308 of the John J. Ford Jr. Collection, where it was cataloged as:
“235. Boatn. J. Larogue. Ottawa Contgt. Extremely Fine. Original ribbon.”
The Ford catalog also records provenance from the F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
Accompanying older collector/sale documentation further identifies Larogue as confirmed on the medal and clasp roll and notes the scarcity of medals issued to the Ottawa Contingent.
