Offered here is a scarce 1881 first edition, first issue of Joel Chandler Harris’ landmark Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, published by D. Appleton and Company.
This copy exhibits the recognized bibliographical points identifying the desirable first issue / first state, including:
- “presumptive” on the final line of page 9
- Rear publisher advertisements do not advertise Uncle Remus
- First page of advertisements begins with “A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine”
- Original greenish-blue pictorial cloth binding with gilt rabbit decoration
- All plates and engravings appear to be present
- Pages appear complete and remain attached
These issue points distinguish the earliest state from subsequent 1881 issues, in which the text and publisher advertisements were altered.

Condition
The binding is loose and fragile, with considerable wear from age and use. The pages remain attached, but the binding is weak and should be handled carefully. The boards, spine and edges exhibit substantial age-related wear, rubbing and deterioration. Pages show expected toning, discoloration, spotting/foxing and other signs of age and handling.
Despite the condition of the binding, the book appears complete, including its plates, engravings and rear advertisements. No attempt has been made to repair, restore, clean or otherwise alter the book.
