Dark cloth hardcover with decorative gilt stamping, pp.423. Featuring an antique calligraphied signature, in ink, on the front endpaper, reading "Thos. [for Thomas] B. Forbes Parma, Cuya Co. [for Cuyahoga County] Ohio." And in cursive pencil on the blank page preceding the title page: "Miss Phila A. Forbes Mrs. T. B. Forbes" - the maiden name and married name of Thomas' wife (if they did marry).This Victorian-era text offers a deep dive into 19th-century American domestic life and values, featuring dedicated chapters on marriage, parenting, daughters, etiquette, masters, and servants. It's a cultural artifact of post-Civil War American home life and is collected as both a religious text and cross-over to Americana.
This copy features two highly desirable, original full-page engraved plates protected by their original tissue guards:
1. "Home" (between pp. 212-213)
2. "Grandfather's House" (between pp. 296-297)

Overall condition is Good. Binding is secure. Cover cloth shows mild puckering, and gilt is mostly worn off on spine, but still visible on front and back covers. Corners bump, with some board exposure at bottom corners. Moderate age toning and some scattered spotting on pages. The tissue guards and plates have heavier foxing (see pictures). No writing on pages, no tears. A solid copy of this old Christian primer!
