This rare 1860, 788-page volume represents one of the earliest and most ambitious collections of Native American history published in the United States. The first edition was researched and published in the 1830s by Samuel G. Drake, a founder of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and owner of the first antiquarian bookstore in America. Subsequent editions added more information as it became available.

This monumental work examines “the lives of all the most distinguished Chiefs and Counselors, exploits of warriors, and the celebrated speeches of their orators,” together with “a history of their wars, massacres and depredations, as well as the wrongs and sufferings which the Europeans and their descendants have done to them.” The latter quality – the willingness to take a hard look at the long history of abuses heaped upon Native Americans by white settlers – also sets this Drake’s work apart from its contemporaries, most of which were interested only in titillating tales of “bloodthirsty savages.”
