Wonderful pre-Civil War missionary book documenting the Protestant Episcopal mission at Cape Palmas in West Africa. This antique volume includes period illustrations and an impressive fold-out map of Western Africa / Cape Palmas and surrounding regions.
The book also contains an early handwritten presentation inscription:
“Presented to Frances E. Hall by her cousin Lizzie D. S. West, Dec. 25th, 1862.”
A particularly interesting copy with its original 19th-century ownership history still preserved.
Condition: Good antique condition for its age. The spine remains in good shape, especially considering the book is over 165 years old. Original embossed cloth boards retain the decorative gilt palm tree on the front and gilt lettering/design on the spine. The fold-out map is also in good condition and remains a very attractive feature of the book. Interior shows expected age-related foxing, toning and staining, including some areas of moisture staining. Cover shows normal wear, rubbing and edge/corner wear from age. Please review all photographs closely as they are part of the condition description.
A beautiful and uncommon piece of 1850s Americana, Episcopal missionary history, African history, cartography and religious history, made especially desirable by the surviving fold-out map and dated 1862 presentation inscription.
