An especially attractive mid-19th-century edition of the writings of English poet Henry Kirke White (1785–1806), combining a biographical memoir with his poetry and Melancholy Hours. Library records specifically document this Phillips, Sampson 1850 edition.
This copy is notable for its elaborate decorative binding: rich red boards and spine with extensive gilt floral, scroll, lyre, and ornamental designs. The spine is titled “Kirke White’s Poetical Works.” The gilt decoration remains bright and visually striking.
Exterior shows expected age-related rubbing and edge/corner wear, with some wear and loss to the gilt, particularly along the spine and extremities. Interior pages show normal age toning and scattered spotting/foxing consistent with a book of this age. Binding appears intact from the photographed areas.
