This is a notably high-grade survivor of this early Maryland canal-company issue. Only 6 examples have been graded higher by PMG, making this PMG 62 an especially desirable example for the advanced obsolete currency, Maryland or transportation-history collector.
EXCELLENT EYE APPEAL — BEAUTIFUL VIGNETTES
The visual presentation of this note is exceptional. It features an impressive array of finely engraved historical and allegorical vignettes, including the dramatic central scene, classical female portrait medallions and a detailed Native American vignette at left.
Ornate denomination counters and intricate decorative engraving complete a particularly attractive early American obsolete note. At nearly two centuries old, the overall presentation is remarkable.
PMG 62 UNCIRCULATED — “TEARS” COMMENT
PMG has noted “Tears” on the holder, and this is fully disclosed.
The affected area is extremely difficult to detect with the naked eye while viewing the encapsulated note. Based upon its shape and appearance, it could possibly represent an old cut cancellation rather than ordinary accidental tearing. However, PMG has designated it simply as “Tears,” and we make no representation contrary to PMG\'s attribution.
Importantly, even with the notation, PMG assigned the note a numerical grade of 62 Uncirculated.
Issued by the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company, this note represents an important period in early American transportation and financial history. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal was one of the major infrastructure projects of 19th-century America, conceived to facilitate commercial transportation between the Chesapeake region and the interior.
