Antique 19th-century British horse racing engraving titled “Charles the Twelfth”, “Winner of the Great St. Leger 1839”. The artwork depicts the famous racehorse Charles the Twelfth being led by his bridle, winner of the Great St. Leger 1839.
The original painting was by C. Hancock, one of the most respected Victorian sporting artists, and the engraving was executed by J. Engleheart. The inscription at bottom reads, “Winner of the Great St. Leger 1839”.
This is a steel engraving with hand-applied color, not a modern reproduction. The piece was professionally framed in wooden frame with paper backing from the 1960’ies or 70’ies. The engraving measures 5.75” wide by 4.5” tall, there is an over matte glass and the wood frame that measures 9.75” x 8.75”. Weight is 12 ounces.
Frame does have some wear on edges and corners from age and use. Some yellowing of matte on bevel cut. From an estate of a horse lover. Condition is pre-owned. Ships with USPS Ground Advantage.
