Original 1806 Edinburgh edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, published as Decerpta ex P. Ovidii Nasonis Metamorphoseon Libris, Notis Anglicis Illustrata, in Usum Scholarum. A compact Georgian-era school edition featuring selections from Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Latin with English explanatory notes.
Bound in an early full leather binding and measuring approximately 6 × 4 inches, this small-format volume has an especially attractive, well-used antiquarian appearance.
Of particular interest are the multiple period handwritten inscriptions and ownership markings preserved on the endpapers. A substantial Latin inscription begins “Hic liber pertinebat ad Gulielmum Mitchell…” (“This book belonged to William Mitchell…”) and appears to contain an 1812 reference, only a few years after the book’s publication. Additional early names, handwriting, and ownership markings appear inside the front cover and elsewhere, providing interesting historical provenance and evidence of the book’s early use.
The volume displays more than 200 years of age and use, including substantial rubbing and wear to the leather binding, worn edges and corners, age toning and staining, handwritten inscriptions, and scattered edge wear/chipping to the paper. The aged binding, paper, and manuscript additions give the book considerable Georgian-period character. Please review all photographs carefully for condition and completeness.
