This is a classic example of the Spanish colonial \"bust type\" or \"portrait dollar,\" one of the most important and widely circulated trade coins in world history.Minted at the Casa de Moneda de México (Mexico City mint, the largest and most productive in the Spanish Empire), it bears the mint mark \"Mo\" and the assayer initials \"FM\" (used on Mexico bust 8 reales roughly 1791–1800).They were part of the legendary \"piece of eight\" (real de a ocho) series that served as a de facto international currency for centuries—legal tender in the early United States until the mid-19th century, heavily used in the China trade (often acquiring chopmarks), and foundational to many modern currencies, including the U.S. dollar.
Obverse:A right-facing armored bust of King Charles IV (rendered in Latin as CAROLUS IIII). The king wears a cuirass (breastplate) with drapery or a mantle over the shoulder, and his hair is styled in a queue or tied back with a ribbon—typical of late 18th-century royal portraiture on coins.The design continues the bust type introduced under his father, Charles III, in 1772, replacing the earlier \"pillars and waves\" or \"pillars and globes\" design on the obverse.

Historical Context of this 1795 Issue:1795 was a pivotal diplomatic year for Spain. Charles IV’s government had been at war with Revolutionary France since 1793 (following the execution of Louis XVI and Spain’s entry into the First Coalition). Spanish forces initially performed well in the Pyrenees but faced French advances and the threat of invasion. The Peace of Basel (July 22, 1795) ended this conflict—Spain ceded the eastern part of Hispaniola (Santo Domingo) to France but preserved its other American colonies. This peace was quickly followed by a shift: the Second Treaty of San Ildefonso (1796) allied Spain with France against Britain, leading to renewed naval warfare, British blockades, losses like Trinidad, and the disastrous Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Mexican silver was the lifeblood of the Spanish treasury during these wars. The Mexico City mint operated at high capacity, converting vast quantities of silver from mines in Guanajuato, Zacatecas, and elsewhere into 8 reales coins.
