Early American Quarto Bible containing the Old and New Testaments plus the Apocryphal, which contains another 14 books beginning with 1st and 2nd Esdras and ending with 1st and 2nd Maccabees.Printed and published by Isaac Collins in Trenton New Jersey. It measures approximately 8 & 1/4 inches x 10 & 1/2 inches, and a little over 3 inches thick.
It is a Family Bible. It appears that pages were added between the end of the Apocryphal and the beginning of the New Testament. Most of the family history is written in calligraphy and recounts the marriage of Benjamin Davis born in 1758, to Frances Davis, born in 1754. It appears they were married in 1780 and between 1781 and 1794 had 5 children: Anna, Lydia,, Mary, David Jones Davis, Ralph, and Tacy.
At the time of Tacy’s death, her last name was Garrigius (sp).
There is some family history of that additional last name, with lineage from France. The front cover and a few of the forward pages are mostly detached. There is moderate to heavy foxing throughout, which would be expected from a book this age. There is heavy wear on the cover and especially along the spine.Isaac Collins was noted as a perfectionist for correct spelling.
TheMuseumOfTheBible.Org states:“The Isaac Collins Bible was the first Bible printed in New Jersey and was considered one of the most typographically accurate Bibles of its day. Isaac Collins, a printer and bookseller, commissioned a series of committees led by John Witherspoon to correct his proof sheets in order to ensure the text was error free. According to some contemporary accounts, his children also checked for errors 11 more times. Collins printed around 5,000 copies, with some including the Apocrypha and commentary. Published shortly after the American Revolution, this copy includes Witherspoon’s address “To the Reader,” instead of the traditional dedication to King James, as in other King James Bibles.
