ITEM DESCRIPTION
Today we are pleased to offer this nicely preserved volume by Richard Muller!
A rare volume to find in any condition!
First Dublin Edition. Two volumes in one.
\"A delightful copy of a scarce novel which, as pointed out in the Monthly Review 1782, is misleadingly titled, as the large part of the novel is occupied with the life of Viscount Cherington’s father, Dr. Castleford, and takes place, not in Portugal, but in Brazil.
Matters of Church and State determine much of the action and the suppression of the Jesuits is a dominating theme. Once one becomes accustomed to the rather surprising switches between generations and the inclusion of detailed back stories, it makes for a fascinating read, with lively descriptions of Brazil, Portugal and Essex, religious intolerance, piracy and smuggling.\"
In nice condition overall! Later library binding in brown cloth. Binding shows just lightrubbing and soiling to the boards and spine, general wear around the extremities including bumping to the corners and spine extremes, and some rubbing, soiling and light spotting to the page edges. Otherwise this is an attractive, well-preserved antique volume! Tight and square!
Internally, this volume is in good shape overall. Both boards and all page groupings remain attached to the binding. Former owner’ssignaturevisible on the original front free fly page, dated 1826. Otherwise clean with no bookplates or library markings to note.
The text block of this volume isclean overall. There is moderate staining from earlyexposureto moisture throughout unfortunately, but this staining does not affect the readability of the text. There is also typical age-related toning to the pages, as well aslight foxing and soiling scattered throughout, and some light general edge wear. Otherwise this volume is clean and free from rips, tears, writing and markings.
There is a slight musty odoremanating from this volume.
248 pages.
Measures approximately 6 3/4 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide by 1 inch thick.
