This Ode is a celebration of Howard and his reform work. John Howard visited several hundred prisons across England, Scotland, Wales and wider Europe. He recounted his findings and wrote detailed accounts of the prisons he visited, in addition to his recommendations on how to improve in the work \"The State of Prisons in England and Wales\". Howard drew a particular focus on hygiene and cleanliness. He was inspired to write this work following his becoming high sheriff of Bedford and was appalled at the condition of the local gaol.
