Original 18th-century British naval engraving depicting the capture of St. Lucia in the West Indies by Admiral Samuel Barrington in December 1778, during the American Revolutionary War.
The detailed copperplate engraving shows the British Royal Navy fleet off St. Lucia, with multiple warships, boats and the island coastline. The elaborate engraved surround incorporates a large shell, crown, flags, weapons and military trophies.
Published for Barnard’s New Complete & Authentic History of England. Signed in the plate “Hamilton delin.” at lower left and “Thornton sculp.” at lower right.
The engraved caption reads in part: “St. Lucia in the West Indies taken Possession of by Admiral Barrington … the 30th of December 1778.”
Approximately 9¾ × 14 inches overall. Printed on period paper with visible age and substantial edge wear. Condition includes losses and chipping around the margins, tears, creasing/fold lines, toning and general handling wear. The central engraved image and historical caption remain remarkably strong and legible. Please examine photographs for condition.
