A fantastic piece of American Revolutionary War history! This authentic 1776 Continental Currency One Dollar note was issued by the Continental Congress and dated February 17, 1776, just months before the Declaration of Independence. It was printed in Philadelphia by Hall & Sellers, one of the important printing firms responsible for producing Continental currency during this pivotal period. The Smithsonian Institution has examples of this exact February 17, 1776 issue in its National Numismatic Collection. (Smithsonian Institution)
Continental currency was America’s early national paper money, created by Congress to help finance the Revolutionary War. The notes were denominated in dollars and fractions of dollars and were intended to circulate throughout the colonies. Their value ultimately deteriorated dramatically during the war as enormous quantities were issued, giving rise to the famous expression “not worth a Continental.” (American Antiquarian Society)

This example is in Fair to Good, honestly circulated condition for a nearly 250-year-old piece of paper currency. The note retains excellent overall detail, with the original printed designs, lettering, and important historical elements remaining clearly visible. It is signed twice, adding to its authenticity and character.
There is one notable tear at the center of the bottom edge. The tear extends inward approximately 1/4 inch but does not go completely through the note. This is clearly visible in the photographs and should be considered when evaluating the condition. The corners are also slightly rounded from honest circulation and handling.
Despite these imperfections, the note presents beautifully for its age, with strong surviving detail and tremendous historical character. Finding an authentic Continental Congress note from February 1776 in this well-preserved, completely original condition is a wonderful opportunity for collectors of Colonial currency, Revolutionary War history, early American paper money, and Americana.
