PARS PRIMA — volume 1 of 3 only. This is the first volume of a three-volume set, not a complete Bible. It runs from Genesis through the Psalms and ends at page 632 with FINIS PRIMAE PARTIS. Volumes 2 and 3 are not included and I do not have them.
An 18th-century Venetian printing of the Clementine Vulgate — the standard Latin text of the Catholic Church from 1592 onward.
Collation: [30], 632 pp. Text in double columns. Title page printed in red and black. Full-page etched frontispiece (signed Bap. Crivellari sc.), engraved vignette to title, engraved IHS device at end.
Binding: Contemporary limp vellum over boards, [X] cm tall. Remains of a red morocco lettering piece to the spine, gilt-lettered BIBLIA SACRA, with loss to the lower portion. Vellum soiled and age-toned throughout, some cockling, minor loss at the corners and head/tail of spine. Structurally [sound / describe].
Provenance — please read. This copy carries the ownership marks of the Brassey Institute, Hastings Museum, England — the reference library and museum given to the town by Thomas Brassey, MP, which opened to the public in 1881. Present are: an inked oval stamp to the front pastedown, a smaller rectangular Hastings Museum stamp, a further stamp at the end of the text, three purple CANCELLED overstamps, and “R.L.” in ink to the upper corner. The cancellation marks indicate the volume was formally withdrawn from the collection.
