A scarce and memorable Georgian satirical pamphlet presented in the form of a mock sermon. The work is associated with the notorious marital scandal involving actor Theophilus Cibber, his wife Susannah Maria Cibber, and her lover William Sloper. Its supposed author, the Reverend “Mr. Horner,” is likely a humorous pseudonym referring to the traditional horns of the cuckold.
The pamphlet parodies religious sermon literature while commenting on one of the best-known theatrical and marital scandals of eighteenth-century London. An unusual item of interest to collectors of Georgian satire, theatrical history, marriage and adultery literature, mock sermons, and eighteenth-century popular culture.
Condition: Lacking the engraved frontispiece. The front cover is detached; the rear cover, spine and text block remain attached. Later leather-backed marbled boards show wear. Pages have general browning, spotting, and occasional soiling consistent with age. Title page shows some edge wear and darkening. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.
