1737 LIFE REMARKABLE ADVENTURES & PYRACIES OF CAPT SINGLETON DEFOE MADAGASCAR * For Sale

I have here for sale a RARE book entitled THE LIFE, REMARKABLE ADVENTURES AND PYRACIES OF THE FAMOUS CAPT SINGLETON by Daniel Defoe. It is a 2nd edition published in 1737 by John King and Thomas King, London. Illustrated chapter header and capital letter to first page. The narrative describes the life of the Englishman, Singleton, stolen from a well-to-do family as a child and raised by Gypsies, eventually making his way to sea. The first half of the book concerns Singleton\'s crossing of Africa, the second half concerning his life as a pirate in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. Defoe\'s description of piracy focuses for the most part on matters of economics and logistics, and Singleton\'s pirate behaves more like a merchant adventurer, perhaps Defoe\'s comment on the mercantilism of his day. Very few of these have come up for sale in a long time. Only one this century which sold for £575, and there are none for sale anywhere in the world - except for this one!
Bound in full chocolate brown calf leather hardboards with nicely rebacked spine which has 5 raised bands and a mid-brown leather title block with gilt lettering. Unfortunately it is missing a few pages 145/6, 155/6, 157/8, 275/6 and 277/8. A few foxing spots here and there and a stain to last few pages but largely clean. 323 pages. 17 cm x 10 cm.We have over 2000 items in our shop on a range of subjects, so please feel free to have a browse and see if anything else takes your fancy.
Postage will be by Air Mail outside of UK. If you buy more than one item then the postage cost falls for the second and further items as I will put them into one parcel - so you save money. We wrap and post the parcels on Monday and Tuesday - therefore if you pay before midday on Tuesday we will get it in the postal sacks on Tuesday nigh t, and if it is after that time then it will go into the postal service on the following Monday.
