Offered here is a wonderful old mixed group of15 marbles, highlighted by an attractive assortment of antique glazed clay/stonewareBennington-type marblesin brown, cobalt blue, blue-and-white and unusual mottled multicolor glazes.
The star of the group is thelarge approximately 1¼\" mottled brown/green glazed shooterat the far left in the ruler photos. It has wonderful irregular coloring and a very prominent circular kiln-contact“eye.”
Other highlights include the strikinglarge blue-and-white swirled glazed marble, several classic mottled brown Benningtons with clearly visible kiln eyes, cobalt-blue examples, and some particularly attractivegreen, blue, cream and brown mixed/fancy glazes.
Many of the ceramic marbles show the characteristic circular unglazed kiln-contact marks or“eyes”associated with this type of fired stoneware marble.
The group also includesthree later glass marblesat the right end of the ruler photographs, giving the lot a nice variety of colors, materials and periods.
Sizes vary considerably from the smaller playing marbles up through the impressive large shooter.Please refer to the ruler photographs for the actual relative sizes.
These are old, used marbles and show the expected variations in glaze, surface wear, small marks and imperfections from age and use. I have made no attempt to grade the individual marbles.Please enlarge and study all photographs carefully—they are the best description of the exact condition and variety represented in this lot.
