Tip #1 – Use RTV (recommended):
A trusted builder (Nigel at BrutalSpeed, NC) recommends applying a small amount of RTV to the camshaft / back side of the magnet before installing. This can help:
bring the magnet slightly closer to the sensor, and
add a little “cushion” to reduce the chance of cracking during install.
We highly recommend doing this.
Tip #2 – Check for oil in the connector:
Before blaming the magnet, make sure oil isn’t leaking into the electrical connector. These signals run at very low voltage, and contamination can affect the square-wave signal being read. A valve cover leak can mimic magnet issues.
Tip #3 – Torque spec matters:
Torque the magnet to 30 inch-lbs. Over-tightening is a common cause of cracked magnets, which can lead to poor idle and running issues. Use an inch-pound torque wrench and do not overtighten.
Tip #4 – Installs only one way (don’t force it):
This magnet has two alignment posts and will only seat one way—one post is offset. It should “pop” into place when aligned correctly. If it’s not lining up, don’t force it—rotate the magnet 180° and try again gently.
