This is an opportunity to own a nice drachm of Trajan that was possibly struck in Nabataea(see second paragraph) in 113 AD. This coin is silver and features a portrait of Trajan on the obverse with Arabia with camel and legend on the reverse. Trajan was the second of what came to be known as the Five Good Emperors that ruled Rome from 96-180 AD. He expanded the Roman Empire to its largest territorial extent, led major building projects, and enriched the state with new resources.Trajan treated Christianity as an illegal offense punishable by death if proven, but explicitly forbade authorities from actively hunting down Christians or accepting anonymous accusations. It was sort of a \"don\'t ask, don\'t tell\" policy. If an accused person denied being a Christian and proved it by offering prayers and sacrifices to Roman gods, they were fully pardoned regardless of past suspicions. If someone was convicted of being a Christian, they were still given the opportunity to recant their belief. If they refused, they were executed for civil disobedience and \"obstinacy\" against Roman religious custom. Grading of coins is subjective. In my opinion, this coin about VF as it shows a lot of nice detail. The legend is very nice and the date is clear.Trajan annexed the Nabataean Kingdom in 106 CElargely through a peaceful transition after the death of their last king Rabbel II. This coin celebrates this occasion.
This coin has traditionally and mostly been ascribed to a minting in Cappadocia, Caesarea. However, there is evidence to make one wonder if it were minted at a Nabataean mint. The issue is described by Spijkerman \"The Coins of the Decapolis and Provincia Arabia\" from the extensive hoard found in 1966 of similar coins found in the Mampsis hoard from the central Negev in Israel. The 2042 drachms found celebrate the acquisition of the Nabatean kingdom in 106 and are generally attributed to the mint at Caesarea in Cappadocia. Strangely enough the type was not present in a large hoard of Roman coins found at Caesarea in Cappadocia (See Spijkerman p.32-3). Spijkerman believes from the evidence of overstriking that the light denarii of Rabel II of Nabatea were used by the Roman authorities and he believes this provides strong evidence for an attribution to a local Arabian mint. The mint was probably the one used by the Nabateans and the issue was struck from the captured silver belonging to the Nabatean royal treasury (p.34).Volume: III №: 4074Reign: Trajan Persons: Trajan (Augustus)City: Arabian mintRegion: Arabia Province: ArabiaDenomination: AR Average weight: 3.13 g.
