This is a very scarce piece of history minted between 222 and 204 BC in Alexandria, Egypt. It is one of the larger coins ever minted for general circulation. It is an drachm, which is worth 3 diobols or 6 obols. This is a genuine coin of Ptolemy IV Philopator, struck in bronze, and in the exact condition you see pictured. The Ptolemaic Period in Egypt was from 332 BC to 30 BC, though the Ptolemaic Kingdom was formally established in 305 BCE when Ptolemy I became king. The dynasty ended with the defeat of Cleopatra VII and the subsequent Roman takeover in 30 BC. This period saw Egypt ruled by a Greek dynasty, beginning with Alexander the Great\'s conquest and ending with Rome\'s dominance. Ptolemy IV’s reign was marked by the Fourth Syrian War (219–217 BC) with the Seleucid empire, which culminated in a decisive Ptolemaic victory at the Battle of Raphia, one of the largest battles of the Hellenistic Age. The coin features a portrait of Zeus-Ammon on the obverse and an eagle with legend on the reverse. This coin is guaranteed to be authentic. Grading is subjective. In my opinion, this coin is CHF and possibly VF with the legend legible, control mark clear, and feathers present on the eagle all while having a fairly detailed portrait of Zeus.
